The area known as Redmarley is situated on the north eastern edge of Great Witley.

Redmarley

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson’s Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Redmarley as ‘a hamlet in Great Witley parish, Worcester; 5½ miles, S W of Stourport. Real property, £3, 728. Pop., 60’.

The original manors of Redmarley consisted of Redmarley Oliver, and Redmarley Adam.

The name Redmarley is thought to originate from the  red marley soil, and nowadays it is probably best known for the Redmarley Hill Climb:

‘I came across the will of William Gower of Redmarley, 1592, which I find most extraordinary.
Elsewhere, Margaret Gower, his daughter is said to have been married to a John Russell, while Shakespeare researchers have her as married to Thomas Reynolds, one of their children being William Reynolds, to whom Shakespeare left money with which to buy a ring.
I began to think that Margaret had married John Russell first, and after his death, Thomas Reynolds, but John Russell was alive and well in 1592 and called son-in-law by William Gower and his first choice as Gower’s executor – and then Gower names Thomas Reynolds, also called son-in-law as – contrarywise – his next choice as executor. None of Gower’s other daughters was married to a Russell and neither was there any step-son called Russell.
This is a first for me! If anyone can shine light on this I would love to hear.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Margaret Reynolds twentie poundes in money xxx of silver and guilte, one stocke of fower oxen, twentie kyne and a Bull which is at Hawkley in the parish of Pensax and in the occupation of one George …my newe featherbed, one Bolster, one pillow and pillowbeere, one paire of blanketts, one coveringe, two payers of flaxen sheetes, two paire of hempen sheets and two paire of hurden sheets, one dozen of napkyns, and two table clothes, three of the third newest platters, three of the third newest pottingers and three of the third newest xxx my forth best pott my third best candlesticks and a coffer.
The residue of all my goodes not bequeathed (my Legacys payd, my funeralls discharged) I give and bequeath to John Russell my sonne in lawe, gent. whom I make and ordayne of this my present testament and last will my true sole and lawfull executor to see yt trylie performed uppon condition that he the sayed John Russell shall well and trulie discharge and paie all suche legaceys giftes and bequests by me given and bequeathed with the space of one quarter of a yeare next after my decease.
Contrarywise I ordayne and make Thomas Reynolds my sonne in lawe, gentleman, my true sole and lawfull executor to see this my present testament and last will performed as above written.
